There is nothing quite like getting to ride the unusually quiet roads of North West Sardinia in the summer. Yes it’s hot but you don’t care the sea breeze and the comfortable speed you can ride at is keeping you cool, even as you ride inland up the mountain. This adventure starts off from the El Faro Hotel just north of the beautiful beach town of Alghero, with it’s plentiful restaurants, bars, shops, cafe’s and a great sandy beach to cool off on after your 3 hour trip inland to Monteleone Rocca Doria and back via the coast. You will love these roads.

From the hotel El Faro you get to warm up your tires on the road to Alghero heading through the town before turning left up the mountain as it twists and turns on the climb to the sleepy village of Villanova Moteleone with its tight streets being shadowed by typically Italian village houses. From here it’s a short but twisty sprint round the Lago del Temo up to the high point of Monteleone Rocca Doria where you can stop to take in the views of go for a dip I the out door pool to cool off before heading back towards the best part of the ride, the coast road.

On the day back you return through the village of Villanova Moteleone back the way you came but instead of turning right to go back to Alghero you turn left and down towards the coast, depending the mountain firstly through gentle twists then through tight mountain switch backs, F U N for sure. Now with a big grin on your face you’ll be treated with a T junction, this is the coast road. Now you could just turn right and head back to Alghero but I’d suggest you drive about 20 mins to your left towards Bosa but stop about half way as the road surface gets a little worse the closer you get to Bosa. This of course might have been fixed since I last road this road but the fun is north of here so turn around and follow every sweeping turn back alone the coast road towards Alghero. There is a handy turning point with a good view of the sea marked on the map.
